Principal Message - October

Dear Traeger Elementary Families,

I hope you are all having a wonderful start to the school year! Our teachers and students are settled in, their routines and procedures in place, and have been working hard and learning so much in the first few weeks of school. A great topic to talk with your child about is our PBIS expectations throughout the school and what they look like and sound like in different areas of the building. You also could ask and talk about the various Conscious Discipline strategies they may be using such as the brain smart start, breathing, their classroom family, etc. We did an all-school roll out of our PBIS expectations in all areas of the school a few weeks ago! Please discuss those items, review the family handbook, and sign and return the blue Traeger Expectations to your student’s classroom teacher as soon as possible.

Each month in our newsletter you will notice PBIS information, updates and key highlights from the month. You will also notice SEL (Social Emotional Learning) tips, information and strategies we are practicing at school and things you can implement at home. Check out this month’s topic of self regulation.

I want to thank each of you for the warm welcome to Traeger and your partnership in your student’s education. We know that we cannot each do it alone and the communication, partnership and teamwork between school and home is crucial to student success. Starting the year off strong with those pieces helps to create a positive environment for all for the year ahead. As a Traeger Staff, we look forward to continuing to build on that throughout the school year.

Wishing You Well,

Kristin Burgert

PBIS UPDATE

During the month of September, we focused on teaching the Traeger Way and helped students practice expected behaviors. As a way to further enforce this, students will be participating in Fall Fest as a classroom family. Classrooms will have the opportunity to demonstrate expected behaviors and be noticed by staff members throughout the school. When expected behavior is noticed, classes will earn a leaf. For every ten leaves, they will earn an entry into a drawing for a $50 Amazon gift card for the class to use as they would like. Ask your child how his/her class has earned a leaf and how many leaves they currently have.

October SEL Minute :

Self-Regulation

Hello! My name is Sarah Walsh and I am the Behavior Interventionist at CTE. Each month I will be focusing on an SEL (Social Emotional Learning) topic being covered at school and provide tips you can use at home. This month’s key topic is Self-Regulation.

Coming back to school, learning new procedures and routines, meeting new teachers, and building friendships can be tough. This month students are learning how to show self-regulation by understanding how to focus attention, control emotions and manage their thinking, behavior and feelings. Self-regulation is having the skill to calm yourself down when you get upset, to adjust to a change, and to handle frustration without outbursts.

Teaching self-regulation takes practice and patience. Here are some simple ways to support your student’s self-regulation skills on a daily basis.

News from the ART ROOM

Hello Traeger Families!  We’re off to a fantastic start in Art class!
The 1st and 2nd graders began the year by celebrating International Dot Day and the books The Dot and Ish by Peter H. Reynolds. Both books are about encouraging others and overcoming our fears in order to create. Here are a few examples from Michael G., Emmalynn S., Blake V., Ayla C. and Liam S.:

Our 3rd graders are learning how to draw using the skill of observation. They began by comparing and contrasting three different vase shapes and drawing them with details in a monochromatic scheme. Next, they are moving onto a more complicated autumn still life with overlapping. Please ask your 3rd grader all about it! Here are some examples from Becca M., Claire A. and Maura D.:

Thank you for your amazing support! You can contact me with any questions by email at melissa.harmon@oshkosh.k12.wi.us or by calling school after the school day.

With much appreciation - Mrs. Harmon
