Principal Message - October 2025

Dear Traeger Elementary Families,

It has been a busy and great start to the school year! Our teachers and students are settled in, their routines and procedures in place, and have been working hard and learning so much in the first few weeks of school. A great topic to talk with your child about is our PBIS expectations throughout the school and what they look like and sound like in different areas of the building. You also could ask and talk about the various Conscious Discipline strategies they may be using such as the brain smart start, breathing, their classroom family, etc. We are currently in the middle of our fall fest, reviewing and celebrating following our all school expectations! Please discuss those items, review the family handbook on our website, and sign and return the blue Traeger Expectations Sheet that was sent home this week to your student’s classroom teacher as soon as possible.

Each month in our newsletter you will notice PBIS information, updates and key highlights from the month. You will also notice SEL (Social Emotional Learning) tips, information and strategies we are practicing at school and things you can implement at home. Check out this month’s topic of self regulation.

This year we will have two all school family nights (for all grade levels and students rather than separate nights for each grade level). All families are welcome to attend both as we will experience different topics at each one. Our first family night of the year will be on November 6th from 4:30-6:00pm. Stay tuned for more details as we dig into social emotional learning, the brain states and literacy!

Wishing You Well,

Kristin Burgert

There will be Amazon Gift cards presented to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners! Winners will be announced by the end of the day on October 30th.
To join in the fun, paint a pumpkin at home and bring it to school! Pumpkins are not provided at school. We will have two pumpkin drop off times: Wednesday, October 29th 2:45pm-3:15pm or Thursday, October 30th 7:30am-7:45am.
This event is open to all 2nd-5th Grade Students at Carl Traeger Elementary School. The project should be completely done by the students. If you bring a painted pumpkin for our contest we ask that you bring it home Thursday after school!  Any leftover pumpkins after school on the 30th will be discarded. Pumpkins cannot be larger than a basketball as we need them to be easy to carry and move. The Student Council asks that you paint your pumpkin as we cannot accept any carved pumpkins.

PBIS / SEL TIPS:

October 2025

The Traeger Way

During the month of September, we focused on teaching the Traeger Way and helped students practice expected behaviors. As a way to further enforce this, students will be participating in Fall Fest as a classroom family. Classrooms will have the opportunity to demonstrate expected behaviors and be noticed by staff members throughout the school. When expected behavior is noticed, classes will earn a leaf. For every ten leaves, they will earn an entry into a drawing for a $50 Amazon gift card for the class to use as they would like. Ask your child how his/her class has earned a leaf and how many leaves they currently have.

Brain Smart Start

Classrooms established Brain Smart Starts that we use at the beginning of the day. It helps shift our minds and bodies into an organized internal state and helps us to start our day off on a positive note. When we unite, students chant or move to bring everyone together. The connect part of our Brain Smart Start builds bonds/connections so students feel like a valued part of the classroom family. We calm our bodies with a breathing exercise to disengage stress. Lastly, we make a commitment to be responsible, respectful, safe and trustworthy throughout the day.

News from the Art Room

Hello Traeger Families!

I want to begin by thanking our school PSC, the SOAR board and our CTE student council for paying for a glass covering over our big timberwolf mural from last spring. It looks beautiful and now it will stay safe for years to come! Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

We also want to share a BIG thank you to Agron and Lumniji Hajdini for donating sketchbooks for our 5th graders for the last two years! Third and fourth graders make their own, but having a grown up sketchbook is a special privilege for our fifth graders.

We’ve had a wonderful start in Art so far this year! Kindergarteners are learning the basics of how we “do school” in the Art room, and have drawn, colored, painted, danced and have heard great books and videos. They are learning about line, color and shapes, too! Our older grades have jumped into a variety of projects, including painting, drawing and collage.

Does your family do anything creative at home? Do you decorate cookies, craft, draw, dress up silly or do sidewalk chalk? Please send or email me a photo of your family being creative and it will be featured on our Friends and Family Create board in the Art room. Share the fun!

Needed items:

  • Yarn of all colors
  • Bubble wrap and Amazon bubble mailers

Thank you for your amazing support! You can contact me with any questions by email at melissa.harmon@oshkosh.k12.wi.us or by calling school after the school day.

With much appreciation - Mrs. Harmon
